Aortic and cardiothoracic surgery are continuously changing
and developing fields, with new understandings of pathology evolving into new modalities
for treatment and innovative treatment approaches. Thus, there is an imperative need for
surgeons dealing with cardiothoracic diseases to be updated on an ongoing basis on the
etiology, functional abnormalities, disease processes, and state-of-the-art therapies in a
broad range of areas, including aortic surgery, adult cardiac surgery, general thoracic
surgery, and adult congenital heart surgery.

At the conclusion of the activity the participant should be able to:
· Summarize the natural history, pathology and treatment of aortic aneurysms and
aortic dissection
· Discuss the appropriate use of endovascular therapies to treat aortic disease
· Identify the current surgical trends and treatment for aortic and cardiothoracic disease,
as well as the associated risk factors
· Discuss the newest therapy and device treatments for aortic aneurysms, coronary artery
and valvular disease
· Describe the varying techniques utilized in the newly developing field of
transcatheter valve placement
· Summarize the latest results of current studies for valve sparing vs. valve replacement
in Marfan syndrome
· Describe the most recent updates of techniques associated with minimally invasive
mitral valve surgery as well as mitral valve reoperations
· Summarize the future of robotics in cardiac surgery
· Explain the current status of treatment for thoracic malignancies
· Outline the current surgical treatments available for congenital heart disease
