The molecular mechanisms, which regulate skeletal muscle development and regeneration, have proved to generate paradigms for several other organs and tissue. In the past, several ground breaking discoveries were made in the skeletal muscle system. The advanced state of the field and the quality of the groups focusing on this model system make it very likely that the skeletal muscle community will continue to deliver major contributions to our understanding of organ development and regeneration. Transcriptional control of development and differentiation, cellular reprogramming, protein stability, epigenetic regulation and stem cell biology are just some of the topics, which flourish in the skeletal muscle field resulting in a major attraction of productive research groups. 

The last years have seen an enormous increase of scientists attracted to skeletal muscle biology, which has several reasons

# Muscle stem cells have proved to be an unusual versatile system to study general questions in stem cell biology.
# Scientists interested in systems biology have entered the field.
# Epigenetics, which experiences an increased interest, has been one of the strongholds in muscle cell biology.
# The skeletal muscle field is unusually cohesive and benefits from several international collaborations and initiatives
