Welcome to the STL homepage, and thank you for taking your time to learn about us. The Signal Transduction Laboratory (STL) is involved in defining the molecular mechanisms of the G protein mediated signal transduction pathways. The Laboratory focuses on the two different aspects of G-protein signaling: The first one focuses on defining the molecular components involved in G-protein signaling while the second one focuses on utilizing such knowledge to develop a diagnostic biosensor.

Having a central role in signal transduction, a defective G-protein signaling program has been implicated in several pathological conditions. It has been well documented that an error in the expression or regulation of a G-protein program can cause aberrant cell growth and oncogenesis. As the precise mechanism by which these mutant G-proteins disrupt normal cell growth is not fully understood, our efforts are focused on identifying the mechanisms underlying the oncogenic pathways activated by these G-proteins.

Other major area of research in the laboratory is to develop a sensitive diagnostic biosensor for different chemical and biological molecules of interest, using the G-protein coupled olfactory receptor system.

The Laboratory consists of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students from different programs within the Temple University College of Medicine. The mission of the Laboratory is to create an interdisciplinary research program in which young scientists can be trained towards identifying newer therapeutic targets for different diseases - including cancer- and to develop better diagnostic tools.
