The University has three missions, defined in the Law on the University:
service in the city
The University offers courses of basic training, thorough and continues, organized according to the principle of the European system of the appropriations (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System - ECTS). 30 appropriations ECTS are normally acquired after one six-month period of studies.
The basic training is made up of two courses of studies:
a) the university baccalaureat (bachelor) which is equivalent to 180 appropriations ECTS.
b) the university control (master) which is equivalent, according to the cases, to 90 or 120 appropriations ECTS.
Parallel to these courses of basic training, the University can propose certificates complementary to 30 or 60 appropriations ECTS.
The thorough formation is consisted:
a) the certificate of specialization which is equivalent to 30 appropriations ECTS;
b) the university control of advanced studies (master off advanced studies - FARMHOUSE) which is equivalent at least to 60 appropriations ECTS;
c) the doctorate.
Continuing education includes/understands:
a) certificates of continuing education being equivalent to 10 minimum appropriations ECTS;
b) diplomas of continuing education being equivalent to 30 minimum appropriations ECTS;
c) masters off advanced studies of continuing education (FARMHOUSE of continuing education) being equivalent to 60 minimum appropriations ECTS.

service in the city
The University of Geneva offers performances of service to the community as regards continuing education, of council-expertises and research. It ensures in particular of the performances of service for the state enterprises and deprived, mainly in the form of studies, of analyses and active research.
The institution also intervenes as regards technology transfer in order to transform the inventions of its researchers into useful products for the company.
